Homeland Security wins the Sunny Side of the Doc Prize at Movies That Matter 2025


Movies That Matter has revealed the winners of its Take on Film & Impact Pitches, a session designed to further develop impact goals and strategies for films. This year, the event showcased 10 projects from around the world.

The presentation of the projects took place on Tuesday, 25 March 2025, in The Hague, The Netherlands, as part of the Movies That Matter Festival.

Homeland Security, a documentary produced and directed by Virginia Díaz & Víctor Luengo, won the Sunny Side of the Doc Prize, which includes two free accreditations for Sunny Side of the Doc 2025 and a free submission for the Sunny Side of the Doc pitch sessions.

Homeland Security examines the European migration crisis, highlighting its evolution from a humanitarian concern to a militarized issue. While the suffering of migrants is evident, the documentary seeks to uncover the entities that benefit from this crisis, focusing on the European arms and security industries.

About the event

Movies that Matter 2025 is scheduled to take place from March 21 to 29 in The Hague and various satellite cities. This annual event showcases approximately 90 human rights films, ranging from short films to feature-length productions, encompassing both fiction and documentaries. The festival aims to broaden perspectives on human rights by using film as a medium to spark debate on issues such as human rights, sustainability, and the fight against injustice. In addition to film screenings, the festival offers in-depth programs featuring discussions, introductions, Q&A sessions, workshops, and teaching aids with activists, filmmakers, and experts to provide context and insight.
